Should a massage feel painful to be effective? It’s a question we hear from people choosing between a relaxing oil massage, traditional Thai massage and a firmer treatment. The short answer is no: more pain does not automatically mean a better massage. The right pressure is the pressure that feels appropriate for you.
What should massage pressure feel like?
Massage can feel gentle and soothing, or firm and focused. Some areas may feel tender when a therapist works on tight muscles, but you should still feel comfortable enough to breathe normally and relax. Sharp pain, tingling, numbness or a feeling that you need to brace yourself are signs to speak up and ask your therapist to stop or adjust.
Everyone’s preferences are different. Your ideal pressure can also change from one appointment to the next, depending on how you feel that day.
Does deep tissue massage have to hurt?
Deep tissue massage typically uses slower, more focused techniques and firmer pressure in selected areas. It does not need to be an endurance test. Your therapist can adjust the pressure, spend less time on a sensitive area or switch techniques if something feels uncomfortable.
If you prefer a firmer massage, tell us. If you want lighter pressure, that is equally welcome. A good treatment is a conversation, not a challenge to see how much pressure you can tolerate.

Tell your therapist what works for you
At the start of your appointment, let your therapist know whether you prefer light, medium or firm pressure and mention any areas you would rather avoid. You can ask for changes at any point during the treatment. There is no need to wait until the end if something doesn’t feel right.
Massage is not a substitute for medical assessment. If you have a new injury, unexplained pain, numbness or an ongoing health concern, seek advice from an appropriate healthcare professional before booking.
