Traditional Thai massage or oil massage: which should I choose?

If you are comparing massage treatments for the first time, traditional Thai massage and oil massage can sound quite similar. Both offer time away from a busy day, but the experience of each treatment is noticeably different. The best choice depends on how you would like your appointment to feel.

What happens during traditional Thai massage?

Traditional Thai massage is a more active treatment combining controlled pressure, assisted stretching and traditional Thai techniques. At LadyBobb, it is performed fully clothed, so comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily is a sensible choice.

Your therapist may work across different areas of the body and gently guide you through stretches. Pressure and movement can be adapted, and you can ask for any technique to be changed or stopped.

Traditional Thai massage may suit you if you prefer a more active treatment, enjoy assisted stretching, feel generally stiff after sitting or driving, or would rather remain fully clothed. You do not need to be especially flexible: simply explain your comfort level and any movements or areas you would like avoided.

What happens during oil massage?

Oil massage uses smooth, flowing movements and can be adjusted from gentle and calming to firmer pressure according to your preference. You remain relatively still while oil is applied to the skin. Underwear must remain on, and professional draping is used throughout.

This is often the more familiar choice for someone who wants to lie back, switch off and enjoy a quieter treatment. Oil massage may appeal if you prefer flowing movements, would like gentle or moderately firm pressure, want attention on tired areas, or simply need some peaceful time away from a busy routine.

Hot oil massage follows a similar flowing style but uses warmed oil for additional comfort. If you are sensitive to temperature, fragrance or products on your skin, mention this before the treatment begins.

Which feels more relaxing?

Relaxation is personal. Some people prefer the quiet rhythm and stillness of an oil massage, while others find the controlled pressure and stretching of Thai massage more satisfying.

Think about what usually helps you unwind. If warmth, stillness and flowing movements appeal to you, oil massage may be the natural choice. If you enjoy stretching and want a more involved treatment, traditional Thai massage may suit you better.

Does firmer pressure mean a better massage?

No. The right pressure is the pressure that feels comfortable and appropriate for you. A massage does not need to be painful to feel worthwhile. Tell your therapist if you would like lighter or firmer pressure, both before the treatment and while it is taking place. Your preference may change during the appointment, and it is always acceptable to ask for an adjustment.

A sensible health note

Massage is not a diagnosis or a substitute for medical care. The NHS guidance on complementary therapies says you should tell your therapist about medical conditions, medicines and other treatments. It also advises asking a GP about symptoms that do not go away or keep returning.

If you have an injury, a medical condition, severe or unexplained pain, or you are unsure whether massage is appropriate, speak to a suitable healthcare professional before booking and tell your therapist.
